The 5-minute introduction to counseling.
In the span of 5 minutes, let me introduce to this subject.
In America,
The estimated number of victims of child maltreatment in 1999 was 826,000.
The estimated rate of child maltreatment in 1999 was 11.8 per 1,000 children.
Approximately two additional children are reported for suspicion of child abuse and neglect for every allegation that is substantiated.
The total number of children reported for suspicion of child abuse and neglect in 1998 was 3,154,000. This is a rate of 45 per 1,000 children.
National Committee to Prevent Child Abuse. 1999. Current Trends in Child Abuse Reporting and Fatalities: The results of the 1998 Annual Fifty State Survey. Chicago, IL: National Committee to Prevent Child Abuse.
The number of children abused or neglected in 1986 was 931,000; in 1993 the number of children was 1,553,800. (This is a two point estimate that does not reflect the flattening trend since 1992. The NIS-3 number for 1993 is higher than the number reported in the Annual Fifty State Survey because it included cases not known to child protection agencies.)
Sedlak, A., & Broadhurst, D. 1996. The Executive Summary of the Third National Incidence Study of Child Abuse and Neglect (NIS-3). Washington, DC: Government Printing Office.
The assignment for this unit in Child Abuse and Neglect has been structured to challenge your inner powers to empathize and interpret the feelings of a victim of abuse. These skills are necessary for all of us that are working in this field. I would like for you and your partner to travel the Internet to the following site;
http://www.geocities.com/afterthestorm1/therearesecrets.htm.
Please open this site, read and reflect on this poem. Upon completion of this step, draft a general blueprint on how your team would propose to represent to others the feelings expressed in this poem without the use of words. Upon completion of this task, the next step in this assignment is to formulate a strategy for the implementation of this proposal. Once you have formulated the strategy, your next task is to create a workable plan of action to fulfill this assignment. The final steps of this assignment are to present your portrayal and then present your team’s descriptive picture of the victim for all to review and reflect. Successful completion of this assignment will be evaluated upon how well the final product meets the standards that have been set within the text of this assignment. Good luck and enjoy.

Wayne: the poem is very touching to me. As a mother myself, I am very sympathetic to those children who suffer from abuse. I like the assignment. The music is melodic, the picture is peaceful, and the poem is simple, gentle, written as a child. All togther all I feel is the sadness and sorrow and suffering because the contrast and the gentel voice of the children. I am sure your students would find this assignment very provocative and help prevent children abuse and neglect.
